your beauty exceeds
the scars on your self-esteem;
accept compliments.

This haiku struck a chord with me. There are people I know who are wonderful people, but are sometimes so consumed by their insecurities that they feel unworthy to accept compliments gracefully. Thanks for the eloquent message.
Thanks for your comment, yoko.
I’ve been touching on themes of beauty and perception in scattered posts recently. What I finally pieced together in my head is that our tendency to flock to mass conclusions about worth and significance is the same tendency that makes it so hard for us to accept divergent ideas of beauty.
Something in me has always been indignant toward that trend. (And now by expanding the message from the 17 syllables above, I may have also robbed it of its eloquence.)
