Friday Random Ten XI ( “you can’t even remember what I’m trying to forget”)

Adding to the randomness of this week’s edition is the fact that I didn’t get to post it until Saturday, but otherwise the rules remain the same: start the digital music machine in random mode and see what pops up. The results this week were interesting (and hey, even the real writers are doing it):

    1. Leave the Biker – Fountains of Wayne (Fountains of Wayne)
    2. What You Are – Dave Matthews Band (Everyday)
    3. Poughkeepsie – Over the Rhine (Good Dog, Bad Dog: The Home Recordings-Ind. release)
    4. They Stood up for Love – Live (The Distance to Here)
    5. W.M.A – Pearl Jam (Vs.)
    6. Nothing Like a Train – Vigilantes of Love (Audible Sigh)
    7. Mr. Golden Deal – Tonic (Lemon Parade)
    8. Dirty Day – U2 (Zooropa)
    9. Jimmy – Lost Dogs (Little Red Riding Hood)
    10. Bring it on – Black Lab (Your Body Above Me)

Notes and awards for this belated edition:

  • Starting with the artists on this list I’ve seen in person: Seen ‘em all this time around, which I didn’t realize until I looked the list over a second time (forgot I saw Black Lab down at the TLA in ‘97 or ‘98)
  • Song that disappoints me when I hear the album version, even though I like it: W.M.A. -why? Because I once heard a live rendition of it done by King’s X bassist/vocalist Doug Pinnick when he toured with Pearl Jam. Anyone who knows how unbelievably superior Pinnick’s voice is to Vedder’s will grasp the magnitude of the let down.
  • Song that never disappoints me, mostly because of the angel doing the singing: Poughkeepsie -I could never say too many times how unfathomably, sensually beautiful Karin Bergquist’s voice is.
  • Song with the best nautical analogies: Mr. Golden Deal

And now the random links to other folks in the loosely-governed FRT club: The Long Cut (with a list made entirely of legal downloads), Schrodinger’s Cat is Dead, Tattered Coat, Slacktivist, Pesky Apostrophe, and Dan Rubin over at Blinq.

Jimmy brought me to tears again last week during a focussed listen. What a beautiful, desperate song…

You’re right. It seems like most of the Gene Eugene-led ‘Dogs songs were of that variety. Come to think of it, quite a few of his Adam Again songs were, too.
