The Great Raid
This past week has been a semi-vacation week for me, and since I had the opportunity to visit the local megaplex this afternoon, I decided to see The Great Raid.
The Great Raid tells the true story of a daring military rescue of over 500 U.S. P.O.W.’s in the Phillipines in early 1945. The tale involves one of the first great missions of the Army’s legendary Ranger Regiment. Set against the background of the Bataan Death March and some of the poorer military habits of the Japanese army, it doesn’t take anything too lightly, avoids overly sentimental patriotism, yet allows the viewer to admire the valour portrayed in the story.
In short, the film stands on its own, either as historical document or as splendid piece of drama. And as a document of history, this story is severely under-reported, well, until now. And a tip to those who view this movie: there’s some great actual footage included, both at the beginning and as the credits wind at the end. Really good stuff.
