Saying it better than I ever could
Via Rowhouse Logic, I stumbled across a letter posted on Andrew Sullivan’s site. It’s quite striking.
It’s odd, because for all the critical thoughts that have been buzzing around my head for the past couple days of non-stop Katrina coverage, I was determined not to get political about it. When I saw this letter, though, I recalled reading Sullivan’s half-hearted endorsement of John Kerry and feeling like he had tapped into a few of my own concerns about the President. Granted, I still couldn’t bring myself to be a Kerry supporter, but I did, in my heart, see him as the “lesser of two evils.”
Having just digested the ideas in the letter Sullivan published, I sincerely wonder how many people who have supported Bush will continue to make excuses for him.
This has nothing to do with Iraq (at least not fundamentally, though there may be a logistical link to our current situation)—I will still readily admit to having supported that invasion, at least once upon a time. This has only to do with protecting U.S. citizens and vital U.S. ports (without which our nation finds itself on the most precarious economic footing). No matter how staunch your conservatism, you had to be hoping for better than this. If not, I don’t see how you’re looking at the situation realistically.
Read the letter at Andrew Sullivan’s site.
