Rosa Parks, 1913-2005

Upon hearing the news, I began mentioning it to various people I saw yesterday. Couldn’t believe how many people didn’t know who she was. Read about her here.

I can understand not recognizing the name, but I’m a bit troubled to imagine that people didn’t know that with one simple action, she basically started the civil rights movement. How do you live in this world and miss that? Odd.

I’m always amazed. And I don’t really think of the household I grew up in as being all that socially-conscious either. I mean, my parents are good folks and they taught us right and wrong and all sorts of other really important things, but civil rights weren’t drawn into any sort of overt focus for me growing up.

So how is it I’m aware of things to which others in my age and sociological range are oblivious? Must be pathological…
