The Secret Society of the Southpaw

One thing I’ve noticed as a lifelong lefty is that we (who write with the left hand) tend to light up when we recognize another lefty. I can’t count how many times someone has said to me as I was writing something, “Hey you’re left-handed—so am I!” -or some similar refrain. And yes I do occasionally do that to other people when I see them penning with the cursed hand. The observation is often made with the same tone that might be used between two people who discover that they were both born with tails.

Maybe it’s that we feel a sudden relief to know that, in such a disproportionately right-handed world, we aren’t all alone in our plight. Or maybe it’s that, as a group, we’re easily fascinated by interpersonal similarity in dexterous endeavors.

Whatever the reason, this I know: I’ve never heard two right-handed people even acknowledging that they both write with the same hand.

And now I’m curious. How many of you reading this blog are left-handed?

Sadly, I write righty. But I must admit that I was pleased that my boys are left handed and left footed. They really do pay attention to that and get a lot of notice for being left handed—and for being special. Sadly, I’m in a club that includes over 90% of people.

No, wait, I’m O Pos. But my Red Cross donor card calls me a “Type O Hero” so that’s something.

I’m definitely a lefty, of that I’m sure.

Par for the course, I suppose. Even on such a small blog, I figured most of you would be righties.

Mark, I knew I could count on you, and it’s good to see Becky confirm my suspicions.

I second Melissa, the only thing that makes me special is the universal donor status. :-(
