Friday Random Ten XXXIX
(talk of songs and inspiration)

1. War on Drugs – Barnaked Ladies (Everything to Everyone)
“She had a soul and we ate it up;
thrown away like a paper cup…”

2. Blue Sky Mine – Midnight Oil (Blue Sky Mining)
“And the company takes what the company wants,
and nothing’s as precious, as a hole in the ground.”

3. Hung the Moon – Better than Ezra (Friction, Baby)
“I like your eyes—they say you’re true.
The others whisper and lie.”

4. Cry Freedom – Dave Matthews Band (Crash)
“Hands and feet are all alike,
but gold between divide us.
Hands and feet are all alike,
but fear between divide us.”

5. Possession – Sarah McLachlan (Fumbling Towards Ecstasy)
“My body aches to breathe your breath;
Your words keep me alive…”

6. The Distance – Live (The Distance to Here)
“Oh the distance is not do-able
in these bodies of clay my brother.”

7. Don’t Wanna’ Know – Refreshments (Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy)
“I wonder where I’ll be in a year;
probably be sittin right here…”

8. Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning) – Vertical Horizon (Everything You Want)
“Nothing’s quite the same now.
I just say your name now…”

9. The Biggest Lie – Elliott Smith (Elliott Smith)
“Oh we’re so very precious, you and I,
and everything you do makes me want to die.”

10. The Question (reprise) – Bonehead (Fade)
“Well I’m no good, I don’t belong;
I don’t know how I made it this far along.”

Okay… as if I needed another reason to resent modern country music: some guy named Gary Allan covered 8 and brought absolutely nothing new to the table except an annoying twang—and guess what? The guy was all over country radio (at least the segments of it I’ve been compelled to listen to). They could’ve just played the original version of the song instead and given credit to the people who actually created it in the first place. At least it would sound better. Okay enough ranting…

My favorite song in this bunch is probably 3, or maybe 9 (which was a free Paste download). How about I call it a tie and give the prize to the one my brother-in-law would probably choose, which I’m guessing is 1.

The song I’ve always liked because I wanted to imagine it was being sung to me: 5—I think it even contributed to the crush I used to have on Sarah McLachlan.

And finally, I will link to some other random spinners as they occur to me: Autumn, Ben, Brian, Cziltang, Marisa, Sherri

Ah, you can never go wrong when BNL tops the list. Just look at those lyrics…if I had a million dollars for every time I listened to their songs…I’d be rich.

Yeah, I actually like “War on Drugs” a bit more every time I hear it.

Somebody’s got to give the Oils some props here, they somehow has a worldwide hit single with an upbeat pop song about miners dying from asbestos exposure. Who does that?

I’ve always thought the same thing about “Beds Are Burning”—wasn’t this one talking about the demise of humanity? Just goes to show, if you have a beat, can dance to it (and you’ve got references to dancing perhaps?), that’s all you really need.

Right?
