Has anyone seen spring?

When I was 20, I worked in a restaurant as a prep cook. There was a small, but merry band of us who arrived about three to four hours prior to opening time. One of our merry band was a guy named Mike.

Mike used to show up about the same time as the rest of us. He’d punch in, then he’d disappear for about a half hour. The manager would show up at some point (usually 20-30 minutes after us); he’d notice Mike wasn’t in sight, and he’d ask the usual question: “Has anyone seen Mike?”

Any number of us might answer we’d seen him, but that we had no idea where he was at that moment. The manager would tour the restaurant and eventually find Mike hanging out in the employee bathroom or perhaps in the adjacent storage pantries—both of which were located in the basement of the building. It was later discovered that Mike was customarily absconding with various non-perishable food items, and these disappearances were his most apt opportunities to conduct such activity, as the manager was not usually in the store that early.

Anyway, what reminded me of these episodes was the beautiful 70-degree weather we had a bit over a week ago, just a bit before spring was supposed to arrive. Then, like that, it just disappeared again.

Which I guess is okay, as long as it’s not stealing my food.

Yeah – I’ve been seeing spring off & on since January. With usually a 30 to 40 degree swing in temperature within a day or 2. My immune system LOVED this winter
