Can YouTube level the playing field?

This is a use of YouTube that appears to have some real potential. It’s a pretty snappy ad. Imagine if candidates weren’t automatically out of the race just because they didn’t have millions of dollars for TV ad buys… It’d be great to see more lesser known (and third-party) folks reaching out this way.

I love the concept of this levelling the playing deck between the politicians despite how deep the coffers are. But for whatever reason, this was mixing in my mind this AM with the net neutrality concept and worrying that if we lost net neutrality that the strides we are finally making here, in conjunction with a growing population going online could be reversed.

My name is David Slavick, I am a candidate for State Representative in Pennsylvania’s 109Th Legislative District (Columbia County).

I am writing to say that I am using You Tube as an economical means of getting my message out.

The Internet is the single greatest democratizing medium since the advent of the printing press. Like the printing press the net takes mass communication out of the hands of the aristocracy and allows thoughtful yet not wealthy persons to get their message to the masses. The use of You Tube allows grassroots candidates like myself to get their message out while keeping their political and moral integrity.

It is clear that some candidates who are not in touch with the “netroots” will soon likely ruin this trend for those of us who truly are candidates for the people. However, must not rush to judgement and seek to end the use of this medium for political purposes. There are good honest politicians out there and because I am one of them I hope this trend can help level the playing field for those of us who want to run a campaign on ideas not special interest money.

Here is my commercial on You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgKE2tMBD58
