Philly Newspapers sold

for a bit over half a billion dollars.

Stories from the newly-purchased here, and here.

Also Dan and Will (both blogging from the inside out) have thoughts and lists of relevant links for the curious.

I’m still forming my thoughts on this, but here’s one thing: after reading (politically) conservative responses to the news, I’d like to point out that the op-ed pages are for opinion, so they don’t really make such a great basis for accusations of media bias.

My impression is that there are at least good intentions of keeping the papers going, and going with full integrity. It (the cluster of involved parties) seems an odd combination of ingredients, but maybe the fact this isn’t a “Knight-Ridder v2.0” is a step in the right direction.

I’m hopeful, for now. But I’ll be keeping my eyes open too.
