Weekenders

Today will be the first official day of the annual Willow Grove Air Fest. It has become a favorite tradition of us Philly suburban folk, and the recent news of the Willow Grove Naval Air Station being on the base closing list makes one wonder how much longer this tradition will survive.

I’ve never been to the air show per se, but having spent the past ten years working around the corner from the base, there have been plenty of upclose opportunities to see the various aircraft from the parking lot at work. They’ve been practicing a bit, and yesterday they were flying in pretty low, which is always an adventure (especially when you’re not expecting it). This year, I will be down there on Sunday, mostly because of a volunteer engagement manning a table for World Vision, but I will get some good views of the show, I’m sure. For those in the Philadelphia area interested in fancy flying and really cool aircraft, this weekend should be a lot of fun.

And not to ignore one other opportunity coming around this afternoon, this one for a celebrity sighting at the local CBS affiliate, where you can meet Amber Tamblyn (formerly Joan of Arcadia). She’ll be promoting her upcoming movie, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and collecting donated pairs of jeans for charity. Sounds interesting, but I probably won’t have the time for it—and I’m probably a little past the point of fawning over the anyone who can still portray a teenage girl.
