“Will from Langhorne”

I was driving home shortly before 2 a.m. when I heard a vaguely familiar voice on the radio. The man on the radio was soliciting opinions on a couple of topics, not the least of which was newspapers. As the host went on I realized I was hearing the launch of Will Bunch’s next career as a talk radio host. That’s when I picked up the phone and made my first call to the “Big Talker” in ages. Feeling thankful for the small things today

I meant to post yesterday on the one year anniversary of my daily haiku habit, but I’ve been so preoccupied I forgot. I really thought I would’ve grown tired of them by now. Turns out I’m quite addicted to them (though the qualitative output may vary).

In other news, as I mark the exact moment I entered this world 35 years ago, I should be en route to the Presidential Candidate Forum sponsored by ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now). The forum will be held this afternoon, starting at noon, at Bright Hope Baptist Church in North Philly. A gaggle of bloggers, of which I am one, have been allowed to cover the event, though at last check, I’m not sure if they’ll have wi-fi capabilities in the church or not. Still, it should be an interesting way to spend part of my birthday – and I’ll blog about it somewhere (definitely on Philly Future, perhaps here, too), eventually.

Finally, kudos to the first person who can explain the relevance of the title to this post. Of course, I’ll have no way to know if you googled it or not…

Blogarithms

It turns out I was interviewed yesterday by Josh Cornfield from the Metro for its local “Blogarithms” section. Things are customarily hectic lately, so I wasn’t totally sure any of it actually happened until I got a heads up this morning from an old friend I haven’t seen in years.

A lot of the conversation revolved around Philly Future, and I liked Josh’s approach on the citizen journalism questions. I like my answers almost as much. The only thing that would have been better is a live hyperlink from the online story.

Featured blogging nominations

From Philly? Have a Philly blog you enjoy reading?

Why not nominate it? Offer stands until noon tomorrow.

Can YouTube level the playing field?

This is a use of YouTube that appears to have some real potential. It’s a pretty snappy ad. Imagine if candidates weren’t automatically out of the race just because they didn’t have millions of dollars for TV ad buys… It’d be great to see more lesser known (and third-party) folks reaching out this way.

Can someone explain page rank to me?

‘cause mine just jumped from five to nine sometime between yesterday morning and forty minutes ago, and I don’t believe it’s legitimate for some odd reason. I hit refresh a few times, but no change. Weird…
To change the subject, congratulations to Mark of The Long Cut on two counts: one, celebrating his 13th wedding anniversary, and two, completing the annual Broad Street Run, which this year spawned a Baghdad version – so congrats to the service personnel who ran on Sunday as well.

In other news, Ellen, of Tao of Jordan, has been quietly warming new digs over at The Sam and BeckyBoo Show – and yes, she’s another convert to Wordpress (it’s always good to see another newcomer to the flock). She’s a cat person, but you can stop over and congratulate her anyway.

Another question before I go: does anyone know anything about this ESS.TV? I’ve been watching it a little these past few days via Winamp, but I can’t figure out how they do it, or if it’s even remotely legal. Anyone?

And now, as I type this ending to another potpourri post, I see my page rank has once again plumbed to its normal depths. At last, all is right with the world and I can finally get some sleep.

Philly Future: Featured Blog nominations

Every two weeks, it happens (almost) like clockwork. Nominations for Featured Blog are being solicited once again at Philly Future.

If you’ve got a favored blog that meets the criteria, please jump right in with your nominations – now through Friday afternoon at three. Just click here and comment with your nomination.

If a tree falls in the forest without the MSM there to report it, does it make a sound?

Or more to the point, if your name is legally changed but the mainstream media fails to report it, is it still your name? Shelley Powers doesn’t quite ask that question, but it’s what I came away with after perusing the Wikipedia discussion concerning danah boyd. [Read more →]

Featured blog nominations

Are you a Philly area resident or devotee to the Philadelphia blogosphere? If so, it’s that time once again to nominate area blogs for featured blog status at Philly Future—which should be even more fun with the newly-enabled anonymous commenting…

Featured Blog Noms

Featured Blog nominations are on once again at Philly Future.

Valerie McDonald Roberts

Greg at Keystone Politics interviews Valerie McDonald Roberts, a Democrat running for Lt. Governor this year. Very thorough, very well done. Read it if you want some perspective on candidates in PA beyond just those being blessed by the party machines.

Philly IMC at the UnCon

The Independent Media Center of Philadelphia has posted a video report from the Norgs Uncon. A nice snapshot of what the day was about. View (or download) it here.

The Norg: Adapt or you will be assimilated?

Oh, wait—that’s the Borg. Or is it? The Norg (a contraction of “news organization”) is what this Saturday’s Un-Conference at Penn’s Annenberg school will be addressing.

What’s an Un-Conference? It’s an amibitious effort to harvest ideas about the 21st century news organization. The seeds will be an eclectic mix of citizen and mainstream media types converging in a decidedly non-conferential fashion. Read more from Will Bunch.

Come to think of it, that Borg analogy may have some relevance, but hopefully resistance is not futile.

Featured blog selection process is on again

at Philly Future, where nominations will continue until the middle of this afternoon (you’ll know if they’re closed, because no more comments will be accepted). If you’re a Philly reader with a blog to suggest that isn’t already listed on this page’s blogroll, please feel free to nominate it.

UPDATE: Nominations are over, but the poll is up.

Back to the future?

er, back to the Philly Future, that is. Reborn with a new, faster host. If you’re a regular over there, you might want to sample it. Go ahead—give it a spin.

Growing pains

If you’ve tried visiting Philly Future in the past ten hours, you’ve probably noticed there’s a little problem. Simply put, more traffic has resulted in higher database usage (to the point that the hosting provider has been stretched to its outer limits).

The situation is being addressed and will hopefully be resolved shortly.

UPDATE: It appears that sometime early Sunday evening, the site went live again. Hopefully, that’s the last of the major inconvenience.

UPDATE II: Not only is my most popular outgoing link up and running, but as of late Sunday evening, it has migrated to new, faster host. Woohoo! (as Homer would say)

Nominate, nominate, nominate

The current round of featured blog nominations is under way at Philly Future. Any Philly folks out there willing to nominate someone? Click here.

Last call for featured blog voters

I know half of my visitors come from the Philadelphia area, so those who haven’t voted in the latest featured blog poll at Philly Future may want to do so by noon today. One or two votes will probably be the difference, the way things are going so far.

Democracy in Featured Blogs?

If you’re a localite to the Philadelphia region and you’re a Philly Future member (or are open to such a membership), you can now cast a vote on the next featured blog.

But hurry—voting closes tomorrow morning.

Happy Birthday Ben!

No speechifying (like yesterday’s post for MLK Day) but Ben Franklin is especially big in these parts, so here’s an Inquirer column in his honor. And lest we forget, Ben was the prototypical blogger (sort of).
